Stop retyping rate cons. Start checking them.

What it fills in

• Every stop, pickup and delivery, in order, with the address, the date and the appointment time or window.
• The reference numbers the driver will be asked for: pickup numbers, PO numbers and appointment numbers.
• The broker, the rate and the miles, the weight, the commodity and the equipment, including the trailer type and a reefer temperature when the rate con prints one.
• The terms: late fees, tracking rules, detention, layover, paperwork deadlines, each one as a short sentence with its amount in its own field.

A typical rate con is read in 15 to 40 seconds. A long four-page one takes about a minute.

You stay in charge

Nothing is created until you click Create. Anything the reader isn't sure of is marked for you to check, in plain words: a pickup number that isn't on the rate con, a ZIP code it couldn't find, a trailer type that doesn't match a temperature on the page. If something required is missing, for example a rate that was never printed, Create stops and points at the field.

Software reads the document; a person decides. Always look over the load before you dispatch it.

The fine print, with the money next to it

Rate cons hide their penalties in long sentences on page 2 or 3. The reader pulls each one out and puts the amount where you can see it. Examples from real rate confirmations (broker names removed):

When one sentence carries two amounts, the second one is named so you can add it as its own term. Nothing is dropped quietly.
